Who is April May Burnside?
I am an author who writes songs, poetry, folklore-inspired fiction, haunting memoir, and emotionally resonant stories rooted in Arkansas and the Ozarks. My work explores healing, memory, faith, mystery, and the unseen threads that shape our lives.
I love folklore, cryptids, ghost towns, and haunting stories. Are your books for me?
Probably yes - if you enjoy eerie atmosphere, slow-burn mystery, and stories that feel like modern folklore. My books blend myth, place-based storytelling, and emotional depth, with just enough darkness to keep readers turning the pages.
Do teens or young readers enjoy your books?
Some older teens do, especially those who enjoy reflective, character-driven stories. My upcoming book “Highly Scientific Record” is a YA novel for Teens, it touches on teenage life, friendships, and growing up with honesty and humor. I also have a couple Children’s books “Pepper the Pug” and “Zombie Stomp” perfect for young readers.
What genres do your books fit into?
My writing crosses several genres:
• folklore & legend
• dark fable
• quiet horror
• literary fiction/ YA
• reflective memoir
If you like stories with heart, mystery, and atmosphere - you’ll likely feel at home here.
Who is the Ozark Howler?
The Ozark Howler is a legendary creature said to roam the Ozark mountains. My book Shadows of the Ozark Howler uses this folklore as the backdrop for a story about fear, faith, small-town secrets, and the shadows we inherit.
I’m looking for a new book - folklore, horror, dark fantasy, or something mysterious. Where should I start?
A great starting point is Shadows of the Ozark Howler or South Wind Shatter. If you enjoy reflective writing with a haunting tone, these books are a good introduction to my work.
